In the city of Cerro de Pasco, a big mining company destroyed the landscape and polluted the environment, covering two important Andean lakes with toxic mining wastes.
People living in the area began to experience severe illnesses such as miscarriage, cancer, skin diseases, and respiratory problems.
Children are significantly affected by heavy metals exposure. Our studies demonstrated how the mining company is responsible mostly for soil pollution. Children enter in contact playing in the ground or breathing soil dust because their homes and schools are close to mining dumps.
Children living near the mine show a higher rate of some psycho-physical problems, as demonstrated in our recent study, compared to children 30 km far from the mine who do not report health problems heavy metals related.
Source International is working for 10 years, collecting evidence about this ecocide and human rights violations.
Across the years, we support local communities and local NGOs training and informing them about mining impacts and analyzing children's exposure to heavy metals pollution.
We met Local Government and Central Government to show our investigations' results to highlight the risks and claim health care and environmental remediation.
In the last month, one of the mining company's investors, to which we send our studies to push them to divest from the company, took this important decision!
We need more scientific (environmental and epidemiological) data to start some legal processes to claim JUSTICE!
