This initiative engages elementary and middle school students in actions to protect and enhance biodiversity in Alta Langa, Piedmont. In October, we will visit the local schools to talk about climate change and biodiversity and assist kids in planting their Karma Forest.
Why this project?
Alta Langa, a beautiful area of Piedmont, has since 2022 been suffering from severe water stress caused by climate change and intensive monoculture of hazelnuts, which requires significant irrigation to thrive. In 2023, Source International engaged the Bossolasco-Murazzano comprehensive school in “Rete Scuole per l’Acqua” (“School Network for Water”), an educational project on water conservation. Alongside practical workshops, the project involved the installation of 4 rainwater collection tanks to irrigate the school gardens.
This year’s project focuses on the importance of preserving biodiversity as a key strategy to mitigate climate change – a topic worth raising awareness on in a region characterized by extensive monoculture practices.
What will we do?
The project Langhe a Scuola: azioni e voci per il clima started in June 2024 and will engage 180 elementary and middle-school students, 10 teachers, and citizens of the municipalities of Bossolasco, Murazzano, Lequio Berria, and Cravazana. Here are the five key actions we will put in place.
The project is supported through the 8 x 1000 funds of the Italian Buddhist Institute Soka Gakkai. Stay tuned for the next updates!
